2022 GO YOUTH CLUB VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE - PROGRAM CANCELLED!

Posted:  Tuesday, January 11 @ 10:05 pm

It is with the utmost regret that the decision to cancel the balance of the 2022 GO Youth Club Volleyball League has been made.

  • The rapidly increasing Covid-19 cases, increasing hospitalization numbers and ICU admissions and the return to in-school learning have all factored into this decision.
  • The Tournament organizers of all five (5) volleyball tournaments which were scheduled between January 8-29 at the Saville Community Sports Centre have chosen to cancel their tournaments as well.
  • The facility was also slated to host a Judo Nationals event this upcoming weekend which was also canceled by the organizer.
We understand that other sports and other volleyball tournaments have chosen to go forward with their events in other facilities and we wish those participating all the best.

Let us all do our part to ensure that this omicron wave plummets as quickly as it has spiked, so that the Youth Club Volleyball season can proceed as scheduled with the first Volleyball Alberta Premier Tournament in February.

We wish all of you a successful season and look forward to offering the 2023 GO Youth Club Volleyball League under more normal circumstances!

WEEK 2 (Sunday, January 9, 2022) - CANCELLED

Posted:  Thursday, January 6 @ 10:05 am

The decision has been made to postpone the start of the GO Youth Club Volleyball League once again for this week (January 9th Games Cancelled).  We will re-evaluate the situation over the next week and decide on whether or not to begin the league on Sunday, January 16th.  Please note that this will be the final postponement, the next announcement will determine whether the league begins on January 16th or is cancelled outright.

WEEK 1 (Sunday, January 2, 2022) - CANCELLED

Posted:  Friday, December 31 @ 8:30 am

Due to the current situation and with the health and safety of all concerned as the main determining factor, we regret to inform you that the first week of play (Sunday, January 2, 2022) in the GO Youth Club Volleyball League has been cancelled.  As the situation evolves a decision regarding Week #2 and all subsequent weeks of play will be made on a week-by-week basis.

This decision was not made lightly and many considerations were factored into this decision.  The growing number of COVID-19 cases both locally and provincially due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant; the fact that we have already had a number of GO League teams who have indicated that they have players and families in quarantine; plus the Government of Alberta’s announcement, late yesterday, that schools provincewide will not resume until January 10th, all played a factor in this decision.

The Government of Alberta added new restrictions on December 24th, among those restrictions were capacity limits on large venues and they also asked ALL Albertan’s to reduce their contacts by half.  Although they have not banned indoor sport at present, these restrictions were also considered when this decision was made to cancel the first week of play for the GO Youth Club Volleyball League.

The Edmonton Volleyball Centre Society, like all of you, are frustrated by the impact that the pandemic has had on sport and recreation and everyone’s way of life.  We look forward to the day when we can offer sport and recreation programs without having to weigh the consequences of these offerings on the health and well-being of the community.

We hope that you can understand and support this decision.   We strongly encourage all of you to be prudent and safe with your choices and hope to be able to start the GO Youth Club Volleyball League at a later date.

Philosophy & Purpose of this Exhibition Volleyball League

The general philosophy of this league is to allow teams to develop their team play prior to the pressure of the Volleyball Alberta Premier Events. This should free up regular practice time for the development of skills. As such the intent is that it will be relatively low key, more in the tone of controlled scrimmages. In the same vein and to keep costs down there will be no regularly scheduled officials and the competing teams will share that responsibility. However, Volleyball Alberta may on occasion provide developing officials, but they too will be instructed to maintain this low pressure environment. Finally, while the score will be tracked using flip score cards no score sheet will be kept and there will be no league standings.
